The much-maligned and under-appreciated medium found in many basements and thrift stores finds new life at None More Blacker - a celebration of the iconic velvet painting movement of the 70’s, repurposed and rejuvenated by local artists and lovers alike. There will be jewelry, fashion and many crafts all inspired by the “Fabric of Kashmir”.

AIGA discount on tickets to Business Innovation Factory’s BIF-4 Summit in Providence

August 12th, 2008 - David Piehler

AIGA members will receive a 25% discount off of regular priced tickets ($1,200) to Business Innovation Factory’s BIF-4 Summit on October 15-16, 2008 in Providence, RI.

Now in its fourth year, the BIF Summit has earned a national reputation for its unique storytelling approach to an event often described as more conversation than conference. BIF-4 storytellers have only 15 minutes on stage to share a personal story about how they turned an idea into an innovation. BIF doesn’t pay storytellers or hosts to participate — they come because they see the value in this unique convergence.

Presenters at the Summit will include many of interest to the AIGA community. This year’s line-up includes:

  • John Abele, leader of the Grunion expedition and the founder of Boston Scientific Corporation.
  • Steve Bendt and Gary Koelling, founders of Best Buy’s Blue Shirt Nation.
  • Ruby Bridges, educator and activist and first African American child to desegregate an elementary school.
  • Joseph F. Coughlin, founder of the MIT AgeLab.
  • Marc Ecko, who heads a global lifestyle and entertainment empire.
  • Jason Fried, founder and CEO of 37signals.
  • Jeffrey Hollender, president and chief inspired protagonist of Seventh Generation.
  • Cat Laine, Deputy Director of the Appropriate Infrastructure Group helps developing countries get affordable access to energy, sanitation and clean water.
  • Jacqueline Novogratz, founder of Acumen Fund, uses entrepreneurial approaches to solve problems of global poverty.
  • Lewis Gordon Pugh, explorer, environmentalist and first person to undertake a long distance swim at the North Pole.
  • Richard Satava, visionary surgeon who co-developed the first surgical robot.
  • Clay Shirky, writer on the social and economic effects of Internet technologies.
  • John Wolpert, former head of IBM’s Extreme Blue business innovation incubator.
  • Richard Saul Wurman, Author and information architect now is working on “19.20.21″–an attempt to standardize information about 19 cities that will reach 20 million inhabitants in the 21st century.
  • David R. Yaun, VP of Corporate Communications for IBM and director of IBM’s innovation and technology leadership programs.

In 2007, the sold out BIF-3 Summit hosted participants from 174 organizations, 65 percent of whom were CEOs, presidents, founders or senior leaders within their organizations.

“The BIF Collaborative Innovation Summit is my favorite event of the year,” says Taylor, who is reprising his role as BIF Summit co-host. “By replacing canned presentations with something personal, the summit successfully weaves together multiple voices from very different disciplines in a very provocative way. It’s a pleasure to be part of this unique experience again.”

BIF-4 is limited to 300 participants, making the Summit one of the most intimate events of its kind.

Never Sleep: Graduating to Graphic Design - May 5th

April 28th, 2008 - David Piehler

Dress Code - Never Sleep

Monday, May 5th from 6pm to 8pm

“A Magical Evening with Authors: Andre Andreev & G. Dan Covert with cool clients: MTV, Adobe, and Deloitte”

This is a free lecture with free food.

The first fifty guests will receive a free, autographed, limited-edition, commemorative silk-screened poster.

Where:
Johnson & Wales University
Culinary Arts Museum
315 Harborside Boulevard
Providence, RI 02905

On May 31st, Andre and Dan’s new book Never Sleep (neversleepbook.com) will hit the virtual shelves of Amazon.com and the hearts and minds of graduating design students everywhere. This “pre-release” lecture offers a rare opportunity to hear from two of today’s “freshest” emerging designers (dresscodeny.com).

From the book jacket:
“At the combined age of 49, Andre and Dan’s work has been recognized by I.D., CommArts, Print, Graphis, Metropolis, The Type Directors Club, The Art Directors Club, CMYK, HOW, Adobe, Steps Field Guide to Emerging Talent and Young Guns.

They met while studying graphic design at California College of the Arts and worked for MTV. Currently they operate their own studio, dress code, located in the Lower East Side of New York.”

Speaking of themselves:
Dan is Ohio. Andre is Bulgaira. They is dress code. At the combined age of 50 their work has been recognized by shiny awards, appeared in lots of magazines, coffee table books, and 3 museums. They met while studying graphics designs at California College of the Arts. Then moved to New York and got jobs with MTV working in motion and print — before stupidly leaving their dream jobs to start a studio of their own.

They also co-teach Design, Type, and New Media classes at Pratt. A book they wrote about transitioning from school to work in the field of graphic design, entitled Never Sleep, will be published in the spring of 2008 by de.MO books. And a documentary short they directed about Ohio State football fanatics, called Across the Field will premier this Summer.

Andre eats meat and drinks that purple stuff, Dan dislikes puppies and is somewhat of an amateur magician. To supplement their income Dan and Andre work at Best Buy. See for yourself 24 hours a day at dresscodeny.com and swishahouse.biz.

Stefan Sagmeister: Things I Have Learned In My Life So Far - April 24th

April 9th, 2008 - David Piehler

SagmeisterStefan Sagmeister: Things I Have Learned In My Life So Far

Astonishingly, Stefan Sagmeister has only learned twenty or so things in his life so far. But he did manage to publish these personal maxims all over the world, in spaces normally occupies by advertisements and promotions: as billboards, projections, light-boxes, magazine spreads, annual report covers, fashion brochures, and, recently, as giant inflatable monkeys. In this presentation Sagmeister throws his diary, a lot of design, and a little art together with a pinch of psychology and a dash of happiness into a blender and pushes the button. It tastes surprisingly yummy.

When:
April 24, 2008
6:30pm doors, 7pm lecture

Where:
RISD Auditorium
17 Canal Street at Market Square

Admission:
$5 students with ID and AIGA members
$20 non-members
bring a buddy and save!
$20 member and guest
$30 non-member and guest

About Stefan Sagmeister:
